Video by Ellen Donnelly, 2014 FML, XD questions the internet surrogate body and the development of adolescent self-perception. Loneliness and isolation take on new meaning as the avatar perpetuates the teenage boy into infinite reflections of his boredom. Donnelly uses found footage of adolescent boys recording themselves addressing the camera in domestic spaces. She layers original digital animations and text-to-speech recordings of her poetry, manipulating and repositioning the boys' activity as phenomenal rather than individual.

Digital video, 8:05, 2014

FML, XD (which stands for “fuck my life,” followed by an emoji) uses clips of juvenile YouTube users to paint a picture of 21st century loneliness and visible boredom.

FML, XD was screened at Rock Devil Gallery in Baltimore in August of 2014.
